Stop that!

August 4 2026

Reader, I am back! Wow it has been a minute. Hello old friends and new - Stability in Motion (SiM) and me (Kate) are oh so happy to have the attention of your eyes and minds for a moment.

First, I just want to say sorry. I told you all I’d write to you weekly, and for the past three months, I simply didn’t.

Second - Not writing for those three months was a really, really good choice for me, for my relationships, for SiM, and for SiM’s new business buddy, Embodied Works. Thank you for the patience and the space.

Curious about what went down? Oh so much has happened.

Here's some teasers and important facts:

Stability in Motion is still SiM, a place for enhancing your relationships with your body, your loved ones, your community, and yourself. You can still book sessions for bodywork and coaching - in person and online. Fun fact, stating this month SiM now has a second office at Vibe Gym, I'll tell you more about it later.

Embodied works - what is that??? Stability in Motion is me working with all of you to build truly communal health care. But there's only one of me, and that's not gonna cut it. So I'm starting Embodied Works, which you can read more about on the substack for now.

Check out the Substack if you wanna read a bit about the Embodied Works situation, plus some stuff about my life.

Open up the next email to hear more about what’s going down with SiM.

Stay connected everywhere to hear more about all this, you’ll be glad you did.

For now - I have this for you:

If it really isn’t working, stop.

It’s that simple. If something does not work, stop doing it. The complexity comes in when figuring out what exactly it is that isn’t working, so that you stop that one thing rather than blowing up your whole life, but the stopping is actually pretty simple.

Example - The newsletter wasn’t working. Stability in Motion was. I stopped the newsletter, and kept going with SiM for the months of April to July, despite the fact that you all got radio silence from me here.

Another example - every time you go for a long walk, your knee hurts. Stop walking! Kidding, don’t do that. But you do wear the same shoes every time. Stop doing that. Try a different pair, and see if it changes things. Looked at a different way, every time you notice the pain, you think, this sucks, I should do something about that, and you don’t. Stop not doing something about it. Call a practitioner and book an appointment. Does that feel too scary right now, or like something you just can’t bring yourself to do? Look up videos from PTs who do gait assessments and see if you can trouble shoot things on your own. But stop not doing anything differently when the thing you are doing keeps not working over and over and over.

The walking example is perfect - you are literally taking step after step towards your future, and each step you make brings you deeper in the direction you are pointing. If it is pointing toward knee pain, doing nothing different will bring you … ice cream? NO! More knee pain, only.

It's hard enough to see this well-troden but dysfunctional path get more and more deeply established when it comes to our bodies. It's often the most painful when it happens in our relationships.

Do you bicker with your partner every time you talk about scheduling that hang out, or who’s supposed to take care of cleaning the *insert literally anything here*, or the way they answer in that tone that you hate? No matter how much you wish "they would just" you can't do anything about that. And if it's bothering you, than what you're doing is not working.

Stop doing what you are doing and try a different approach. Maybe you pause 3 seconds to breathe or think or just feel whatever you’re feeling before you speak each time. Maybe you bring it up with different words. Maybe you get more emotionally expressive and not less (note that I didn't say more reactive, there's a big difference here).

Sometimes, the different approach is simply stopping one tiny thing. When something stops, it makes space for something else. You don’t need to actually fill that space to feel a difference in outcome.
If you doubt stopping a little thing is enough to make a big change, consider this:
If you put pickle juice in your chocolate chip cookie dough, no functional amount of butter or chocolate will make it less pickly. You gotta cut that shit out.

Not the most realistic example, but I bet all of you can feel what that would be like.

We do a lot of little things in our daily life that are often as absurd as pickle juice in our cookie dough if you take an honest look at them. Those little things are what aren't working. Learn to keep an eye out for pickle juice and your life's cookies will start to be surprisingly on point.

On that strange note, I bid you adieu!

I’ll be back with you all very very soon - I promise I won’t make you wait another month.

-Kate

October 14, 2026 Can you take it easy, Reader? My answer has been no. Really it's been more of "ha, that's funny" or a "why would you even ask me such a thing?" or a simple, "fuck. no." Seriously, it has felt super tough to chill out, physically impossible. I've got sooooo much going externally and internally that the "free time" on that most days on my calendar is large enough to cook or eat or go grocery shopping but certainly not all three. Needless to say I'm alternating between hungry,...

October 8 2026 How are you, Reader? No really, how are you? I want you to tell me, and that's why I asked. If I didn't want to know, and I asked any way, I could claim that I am just being polite, doing what people do to say hi, but I don't really believe it's all that polite. “I hate how are you” said a client two days back. They were not the first ones to express this sentiment, and I tend to agree. The conversation we had after was a perfect example of the unexpectedly juicy thing that...
