Rapid changes - or are they?

March 11, 2025

This is a very big week for SiM, Reader. On Thursday, Vagina Dialogues kicks off. Come join 🙂 Today I saw three clients in the new office - woohoo! When are you coming in for a session, Reader?

And this brings me to an important topic for all of us - change.

Specifically, what change is really.

Three weeks ago no one but a few people knew that I was even contemplating renting a space with any degree of seriousness, and most of those people thought it was an idea for far in the future, mayyyyyyybe by the end of this year, maybe next year.

When I signed the lease, only six or so family and friends knew that I had seen offices (that’s actually a pretty small number for me, I externally process and looooove sharing stuff like this). The day before I signed it, when I fully decided to rent it, my partner suggested I take the first month to settle in, make it my own before the pressure of clients.

On Sunday, I went in for the first time since the lease signing and brought furniture in. Yesterday - Monday - I arranged it with one of those few who knew about it. Today was the first day of operations.

Needless to say, I did not take a few weeks to settle in first.

All in all - from the outside it looked like I went from not even chatting about changing my workspace to fully operating out of a new office in two weeks. There are still adjustments that will be happening, furniture to acquire and arrange and rearrange, art to hang, likely a mural to paint, but it is for all intents and purposes client ready now.

Fast, I know. “Wow - I had no idea you were even looking!” was the reaction of many people that know me and my business pretty well.

But inside, this has been a process that spans years. For roughly three years, I have entertained the idea, and for about two years I have been saying that not having an office out of my house seems like it’s been bad for my business, and for about a year I’ve been saying that I think it might be bad for me and my psyche.

Despite that, that whole year of feeling like working from home might be actually be getting to me in a negative way and not doing the business any favors, it took me until just now to make the outward change.

And that is just fine.

This is a fast past world. We are action oriented - meaning we recognize and value things that look like movement, especially big movement.

Action is fantastic, but in the transtheoretical model of change, it is the last step of a long process, and it is by no means the most important one.

The beginning steps are where the magic is happening.

Think about it. When you summit a mountain and take that glorious selfie on top of the world, the moment being captured, shared, and celebrated was really only about .0001% of the over all journey it took to get there. That final step, the one we are all so keen on, came after thousands of other steps that looked like not much of anything.

Unless the time was taken to recognize them for what they were.

I am THRILLED to be in my office. Today, when I was driving there, working there, not working while in between clients, I felt like I had been doing that for ages and ages. It didn’t feel that different or especially noteworthy and that is exactly what is noteworthy about it. That is what makes it obvious that I did not make this change in a day, or two weeks. I have been making this change internally for three years. This is just the first you all could see it.

I work with clients on this concept, of appreciating where in your change process you are around any given subject (or even subtopics of a subject!) because we need that awareness to not be crushed and deflated by this world where the selfies and celebrations only seem to come in the moment of obvious, in your face action.

Let's go back the mountain (I know, offices, mountains, vaginas - we're all over the place today, but hear me out):

The things that keep us trekking along through that long, hard, map-less, sometimes boring sometimes frustrating journey where we take wrong turns and double back a few times and almost give up are different than the things that keep us going the last 20 yards to the summit. Hell, it doesn’t even start on the mountain. The mountain is like step 3 of five. First you have to realize hiking is a thing, decide it’s even worth doing, figure out where to go and how to get ready for it, then get dressed and pack up, then drive to the trail head and then it starts to look like you might possibly be able to get to the top of that thing after all. That’s an absurd amount of work!

And all of that is change.

So honor the discovery of the possibilities. Honor the packing. Honor the frustrated twists and turns. Honor the part where you almost don’t do it at all, even if that part lasts days, months, years. Honor alllllll that happens before “the change” because “the change” is the smallest, simplest and in many ways easiest part.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this change come to life for me, especially Caleb, Suzanne, Paige, Shanté, Karen, Shannon, Rose, and several strangers who's conversations tipped me over. I love it here at 999 Vallejo St, Denver. I cannot wait to see all of you there one day.

October 14, 2026 Can you take it easy, Reader? My answer has been no. Really it's been more of "ha, that's funny" or a "why would you even ask me such a thing?" or a simple, "fuck. no." Seriously, it has felt super tough to chill out, physically impossible. I've got sooooo much going externally and internally that the "free time" on that most days on my calendar is large enough to cook or eat or go grocery shopping but certainly not all three. Needless to say I'm alternating between hungry,...

October 8 2026 How are you, Reader? No really, how are you? I want you to tell me, and that's why I asked. If I didn't want to know, and I asked any way, I could claim that I am just being polite, doing what people do to say hi, but I don't really believe it's all that polite. “I hate how are you” said a client two days back. They were not the first ones to express this sentiment, and I tend to agree. The conversation we had after was a perfect example of the unexpectedly juicy thing that...
